A content management system (CMS) is a system used to manage the content and addtiontal functionality of a Web site. Typically the features of a will CMS vary, but most include Web-based publishing, format management, revision control, and indexing, search, and retrieval.

Who is Content Management for?

Content Management Systems are designed to enable any company or organization to properly manage one of their most important strategic assets - their web site. Because it is very straightforward to use the basic functions, companies both large and small will find immediate benefits from a CMS.

Do we have to be 'technical' to use and manage the system?

The short answer is no. The basic CMS functions of writing, editing and publishing content, and adding media are usually easy for everyone to grasp. In fact, anyone who can use word-processing software can use a CMS for the basic functions – so you don’t even have to spend much time on training.

How many people can edit and manage content?

Content Management Systems allows multiple people to have input into your website, from those who add product pages to those who produce blog posts for your content marketing efforts. A CMS makes it easy to manage roles and publishing permissions for all these users so that only those you allow can publish content and content only goes live when you’re ready.

You mention DNN - what is that?

The DNN Platform (formerly "DotNetNuke") is an open source content management system that is intended to allow management of websites without much technical knowledge, and to be extensible through a large number of third-party apps to provide functionality not included in the DNN core modules. Themes can be used to change the look of a website using DNN.

Will it help our site content stay more current?

Yes it will. Because changes are immediately visible, and the workload can be split up between different editors, you no longer need to rely on anyone with IT or web programming skills to make the changes you need. Instead of having a web developer sift through hundreds of pages, you simply open the page, make your changes, preview it, go live with the revisions whenever you are ready. With a CMS, the underlying architecture allows you to make maintenance changes, update the CMS software and add functionality all without affecting your site visitors.

What about management approval of content before it's published?

DNN provides these capabilities built-in, including comprehensive Document Management with version control, public or private access to documents and workflow for secure and easy control of your digital assets. With the powerful business rules engine, an administrator can easily implement an approval workflow specific to your needs. This will enable newly edited content to flow through a chain of personnel for approval and final edits before publication. This allows you to tightly control all of the content that is published on your website. It requires no additional software, just your browser.

What ways does it help manage website content?

Content management is not just about publishing content but about being able to remove it when it’s out of date. Each page, or each module on a page can have a defined start and stop date. For example if you are running a holiday promotion, you simply enter the date that you want the information to no longer be visible, and that's it - it will just disappear when you want it to!

How hard is it to make design changes?

It simplifies the task immensely. Because content and design are kept distinctly separate, you can change design elements on the fly, and experiment with different looks to decide which you like best before deploying.

What about search engine rankings?

DNN supports extensive and powerful Search Engine Optimization capabilities giving you the tools you need to get your site ranked highly on search engines. It includes such features such as a URL rewriter, Google Analytics Pro module, editable metadata, support for canonical URLs, semantically rendered menu system, dynamically generated XML SiteMap, control over SiteMap priorities for each page, and the SEO friendly theme itself. Your theme will help your ranking by using H1 tags, Pure CSS designs, and more.

Can we re-use our existing site content?

Yes, that's usually a good place to start. Typically, page content (words) can be cut and pasted into the CMS. Usually the new style is applied immediately, giving you instant feedback on the how the page and your site will look. You'll see it take shape right before your eyes!Accordion content 3
